Endocrinology, Diabetes, Nutrition, and Kidney Diseases Axis

Leaders:
Constantin Polychronakos

Research Themes:
– Hormone Receptors and Cellular Signaling
– Diabetes
– Metabolism and Nutrition
– Fluid and Electrocyte Homeostasis and Kidney Diseases

Research on these themes is pursued by a broad array of conceptual and methodological tools, starting with the biochemistry and cell biology of hormone receptors and related signaling pathways, where the axis is particularly strong. This is extended towards genetics studies of how DNA sequence variation modulates disease risk, as well as in the direction of genetically modified animal models, with the ultimate goal of transferring this knowledge to clinical and population studies of human health as it is affected by factors relevant to our theme. Technologies vary from high-throughput genotyping to expression profiling, proteomics, mass spectrometry, molecular and cell biology, transgenic and knockout animal models, to whole-body metabolic studies, to behavioral and social tools.
