History of the MUHC
In 1997, five leading Montreal hospitals, the Montreal Children's Hospital, the Montreal General Hospital, the Royal Victoria Hospital, the Montreal Chest Institute, and the Montreal Neurological Hospital, joined to form the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). Their individual research institutes also came together to form the Research Institute of the MUHC.
Affiliated with the McGill University Faculty of Medicine, the MUHC represents the first voluntary merger of university teaching hospitals under a single board and administration in Canada. By bringing together the superior clinical and academic resources of McGill's teaching hospitals, the goal was to provide patients of all ages with the best possible care, while enhancing the hospital's outstanding teaching and research programs.
From the beginning, it was understood that in order to remain at the forefront of health care, and to recruit and retain world-class medical, nursing and research talent, it would be necessary to provide patients and health care professionals alike with modern facilities conducive to healing. Through its redevelopment project on the Glen and Mountain campuses, the MUHC is creating facilities that represent the best in 21st century health care design, and which will complete the evolution which began with the MUHC's creation in 1997.
