What will happen to the facilities that are not part of the redevelopment project?
The Montreal General Hospital site will become the hub of the new MUHC Mountain campus. The Montreal Neurological Hospital will allow for the expansion of activities at the Montreal Neurological Institute and some patient care activities. Programs based at the Royal Victoria site, the Montreal Chest Institute and the Montreal Children's Hospital will be moved to either the Glen Campus or the Mountain Campus.
The MUHC is committed to ensuring that new vocations that contribute to the quality of life of Montrealers are found for the vacated buildings. As a first step, the Board of Directors of the MUHC created an independent commission to hold public hearings on possible reuses of the existing facilities in November 2000 and early 2001. Acting on the recommendations of this commission, a qualified professional was hired to direct reuse activities, reporting to a Reuse Committee comprised of eight individuals experienced in the heritage, development, legal, financial and planning fields. In the initial stages, work has focused on updating and consolidating building and site information, and working with various government officials and interested parties to establish a reuse planning process.
The Ministry of Health and Social Services has a first option of refusal on all vacated facilities. Subsequently, should the facilities not be required for medical purposes, other public uses will be examined. As this work progresses, the planning process will include consultation meetings with interested parties and public information sessions.
