Research in Human Reproduction and Development targets four principal issues facing Québec society today. Fertility rates are declining throughout the western world and particularly in Quebec. Understanding the basis of infertility and developing methods to overcome it are key to improving the quality of life of Quebecers. Developmental disorders arising during pregnancy impose a life-long burden on the affected individuals and their families, and moreover constitute a major drain on health-care resources. Learning how to anticipate and ameliorate these disorders is a key challenge that must be met. Environmental toxicants are an important cause of reproductive failure and of birth defects, yet the underlying mechanisms are generally poorly understood. This knowledge deficit urgently needs to be addressed. Cancer will afflict about 1/3 of Quebecers, and its molecular and genetic bases are a top priority of current research. Understanding normal cell and tissue development is a prerequisite for treating the malfunctions that produce cancer.
