November 16, more than 100 guests joined the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) Foundation at the launch of the Dr. Miguel Burnier 20/20 campaign. This $4 million fundraising campaign is supporting the early diagnosis and development of personalized treatments for patients living with eye diseases.
Many of Dr. Burnier’s colleagues and students, both former and current, attended this celebration, which highlighted the achievements of the MUHC’s Ocular Pathology Laboratory. With the prevalence of vision loss in Canada expected to increase nearly 30% in the next decade, the innovative research being conducted in this internationally renowned laboratory has become more important than ever before. Headed by Dr. Burnier, one of the world’s leading ophthalmologists in his own right and the new President Elect of the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology, the lab’s diversity and unique approach to research continues to fuel its success, and it is among the largest of its kind globally.
Funds raised from the Dr. Miguel Burnier 20/20 campaign will be directed towards several initiatives including: the purchase of state-of-the-art equipment, the recruitment of the world’s leading specialists in ocular research, and the creation of an endowment fund to support continued innovation and leadership in this highly-specialized field. “Dr. Burnier’s passion for medicine and his patients is truly exemplary,” explains Julie Quenneville, President of the MUHC Foundation. “The Dr. Miguel Burnier 20/20 campaign will not only support the pioneering work of the MUHC’s Ocular Pathology Laboratory, it is also our way of celebrating Dr. Burnier’s lifelong contribution to the advancement of ocular care in Canada and around the world,” she says.
