On March 17, 2018, a press conference was held for the Chinese media to announce the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) Foundation’s $2 million fundraising effort to build the endowed Contemporary Norman Bethune Fellowship in Cardiovascular Surgery in honour of MUHC cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Dominique Shum-Tim.
Dr. Shum-Tim is a graduate of McGill University’s Faculty of Medicine and completed his residency in cardiovascular thoracic surgery. Following advanced training and research at Harvard Medical School and the Boston Children’s Hospital, he returned to Montreal as a full-time cardiothoracic surgeon at the MUHC. In addition to his clinical and research work, Dr. Shum-Tim is a full-time professor of surgery at McGill University and a member of the prestigious American Association for Thoracic Surgery, of which membership is only provided to an elite group of surgeons who have made significant contributions to cardiac surgery.
The second annual Gala of the Three stars hosted by the Chinese community will be held April 28, 2018. Funds raised will support this important fellowship, as well as the development of patient education materials in Chinese, improving Chinese patients’ access to the MUHC.
The Gala’s Executive Committee members are Si Chen, Michelle Liu, Susan Huang, Amanda Kelly Chan, Andrew Fang, Bin Han, Joe Zhou, Joy Wu, Jiaqi Liang, Michel Wong Kee Song, Ren Yu Xu, Veronique Chu, and Yin Ling.
The Advisory Council members are Annie Yu Chan, Susannah Tam, Philippe Wang, Raymond Tsim, Pierrette Wong, and Andre-Philippe Chenail.
The corporate community has already shown its support for the Gala, with Banque Nationale graciously accepting the position of Honourary Chair, and RBC coming in as a Bronze level sponsor.
“We’re extremely pleased to once again join forces with the Chinese community to raise funds for such a worthy cause,” said Julie Quenneville, President of the MUHC Foundation. “The MUHC’s Division of Cardiac Surgery performs close to 1,200 procedures per year, and patients benefit from exceptional expertise and state-of-the-art technologies. As the only teaching hospital of McGill University’s Faculty of Medicine, the MUHC trains close to 5,500 people per year and the Division of Cardiac Surgery has the biggest residency training program in Canada. Each year, students from across the country and from around the world come to the MUHC to learn the latest techniques on state-of-the-art equipment from the hospital’s seven cardiac surgeons, including Dr. Dominique Shum-Tim.”
